BGIS apprentices gain valuable hands-on work experience, on-site, at some of the UK’s major organisations.
Our apprentices are supervised and mentored by BGIS Directors and Senior Managers. Regular hands-on practical workshops – such as core electrical skills, how to change bearings, or how to engage with customers – are held to sharpen basic skills.
Personal Task Sheets, Task Books and tests are used to help each apprentice gain better understanding of their role and responsibilities. Scenario training is another tool we use to build confidence and knowledge.
An important aspect of our apprentice programme is that as well as enabling them to learn their trade, we also help them to develop the soft skills required to meet the specialist needs of our customers. Apprentices may even be involved in tender processes, providing in-depth insights into the projects they are involved with.
Another great benefit is the way we take apprentices on site visits to customers’ buildings, and external organisations such as an RAF base. These visits are preceded by a comprehensive briefing, and provide excellent opportunities for apprentices to ask questions and gain practical knowledge.
With younger apprentices we like to involve parents where appropriate, to enhance the level of support provided. We are also very willing to help with any work-related difficulties, for example by providing extra maths tuition. We are keen to encourage apprentices of all genders, and can arrange work experience to give an insight into what an apprenticeship involves.
